We are plowing ahead!--Caution! bad garden puns ahead--We have formed a garden committee to take on the work of getting something planted and in the ground for students to interact with and learn from this Spring. We are starting with building some raised beds.
The committee is made up of 6 key roles:
Facilitator/Principal--handles the leadership and project management
of "the big picture"
Garden Coordinator--oversees the physical garden and takes the lead
in design and planning
Planting Day Leader--promotes and coordinates site preparation, building
and planting
Resource Leader--collects and distruibutes educational materials and writes
articles when needed
Parent-Teacher Liason--Recruits parents and community members to help,
and keeps PTC informed
Fundraiser/PR Leader--Seeks funding to sustain the garden
Each role is shared by two or three people, so that we can really maximize our energy and enthusiasm and not overwhelm anyone. Sustainability is one of our goals! Stayed Tuned for the Next Steps
Thanks to all of you that came to the PTC meeting and shared your ideas and questions about a school garden at McKinley. We all agree that the best course of action is to start small, probably with raised beds somewhere on the grounds. We also discussed creating a Garden Committee that would move forward with any action from this point on. More info to come on that!
Please pass the word to other parents that might not have been able to come to the meeting. The more voices that are included in this project, the better it will be! We want this to be a garden for our whole school community.

PTC Garden Meeting Reminder!

School Garden table during conferences
There will be an informational table for the McKinley School Garden set up during conferences. We will have information about what work has been done so far, and what future work there might be. If you haven't heard much about the garden, or aren't sure what exactly it is, come see some preliminary designs that have been created. There was a brainstorming session that parents, teachers and students attended in October. From that conversation, de Santis Landscaping created a conceptual design of what a school garden might look like at McKinley.
Come and add your ideas and energy to the goal of cultivating curiosity at McKinley.
